Art Deco Weekend 2015 celebrates 100 years of the good life on the world’s most famous barrier island, just off Florida’s southeast coast. From its beginning as a coconut plantation running along the Atlantic Ocean, to it’s now being home to the most luxurious modern architecture and 21st Century entertainment.
List of Participating Artists
KITTY CARMICHAEL: Kitty Carmichael is the rebirth of old school jazz remixed and re-imagined with modern beats & sounds. They’ve created a sound that’s a new sort of vintage.
THE SHINY SHOES BAND: A spicy New Orleans style jazz band. Wherever they play they create the atmosphere of an old-time New Orleans speakeasy.
SARAH JANE AND THE BLUE NOTES: Sarah Jane steps from St Louis, with her lush sultry voice in the tradition of a “red hot mama”, along with the Blue Notes to bring you horn infused swingin’ hot jazz and St Louis Blues from the 1920s to the 40’s.
THE DECOTONES: Miami’s premier jazz vocal quintet. Performing arrangements of your favorite standards from the deco and big-band eras.
ALLAN HARRIS: Allan Harris is a world-class singer, guitarist and songwriter. Perhaps best known for his interpretations of jazz standards, Allan’s smooth vocals and guitar-styling easily cross genres, from jazz to rock to blues.
THE WDNA BOOTCAMP ENSEMBLE: This performing ensemble was formed as part of the JECC Boot Camp, which is a workshop that helps students ages 11-18 explore their musical talents.
BOBBY RODRIGUEZ ORCHESTRA: Exciting, versatile and entertaining, this 18-piece Big Band (est. 1978) ensures your next event will be an affair to remember! Playing tunes from 1940s, this band will have you dancing to the retro tunes of the Art Deco era.
On Friday and Saturday, watch Miami Vice episodes, The Bird Cage, and A Hole in the Head at the beautiful Lummus Park while enjoying the ocean breeze.
Swing dance and music enthusiasts from across the country will come together to spotlight the Swing Era and accentuate community instead of the difference that set people apart. Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes and the Shiny Shoes Band will take the stage as nearly 200 dancers hit the floor for a fun night of music and dance! Join the fun and catch the awesome sight of an authentic vintage swing dance experience.
The Classic Cars go on parade, Saturday on Ocean Drive. The parade starts at 5th street and travels down Ocean Drive to 13th street. The Classic Car Parade is always a popular event! Don’t Miss It!!
Art Deco Weekend is happy to present the 5th Annual Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The Miami Design Preservation League has partnered with Tatyana Clothing, Iris Chase Designs, Beauty Touches Group, and Beauty Schools of America to bring you an exciting hour of Art Deco Fashion and Music.
MDPL’s resident artist, Iris Chase worked with Tatyana designers to pick out the best 1930s and 40s Tatyana creations to be presented in the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The best part? You can purchase your favorite styles and jewelry in the Official Art Deco Gift Shop following the show! The selected pieces reflect women’s style during the Art Deci era.
The models are delegates of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants and will walk the runway to modernized blends of famous 1930s tunes. Their hair and make-up will be done by the students from the Beauty School of America in some of our favorite 1930s and 40s looks. Think pin curls and red lipstick. Be sure to come early and save your spot. This has become one of the most popular events at Art Deco Weekend.
Dance through the decades at the 38th Annual Art Deco Weekend to support the Miami Design Preservation League’s ongoing advocacy efforts, free community programming and the new Art Deco Museum exhibits. Dress in your best costume from your favorite decade and compete for fun prizes! All participants will receive an email with detailed information about event registration. Prizes will be given out for top fundraisers, best costume, best dancers and more!
