2016 was a horrible year in countless ways, but somehow musically was not one of them. A few artists were crafting some of the coolest music to come out in recent memory – amidst a backdrop of political and social strife, faraway warfare and domestic hate atrocities, and a lot of shitty top 40 hits.
It’s not often you find a top notch, stoner friendly garage band like Kid Lore in Miami’s less-than-ideal music scene. However, we here at Tropicult like to seek out the good stuff no matter how rare it may be. Featuring brothers Adam Tahoun (guitar and vocals) and Daniel Tahoun (drums) along with bassist Jorge Mogna, these musicians stayed true to their path from the beginning. The Tahoun brothers even attended a Miami branch of the famous School of Rock, an organization that teaches kids how to play rock instruments and start bands.
Miami residents know the countless threats to our city’s existence. A hurricane could come and rip the the place apart, man-made climate change could drown us in a generation or less, and our city is no stranger to criminal violence. Someone even ate a dude’s face once on the MacArthur Causeway, which could also mean we have a zombie problem.
Concertgoers at this year’s Heineken TransAtlantic Festival are in for a real treat when The Budos Band takes the stage. Their music is cinematic. Instrumental and lush with dramatic musical passages, hearing The Budos Band and closing one’s eyes is like watching the opening sequence to a Tarantino flick or even better, a real 1970’s action/adventure.
Bluejay is a local pop sensation coming to rock the Heineken TransAtlantic Festival, Miami style!
The local art scene, in the geographically clustered area of South Florida, took slightly longer to make it into the mainstream. Having finally done so, a light is shone on the underground talent that worked hard for years to get the scene to where it is. It also means that events are spreading throughout South Florida along with growing excitement for the arts.
Ah, the top-whatever list at the end of the year. A silly, subjective thing but the kids seem to love it so here we go.
Beau Stanton’s exhibition and animated instalation, “Message in a Bottle,” was presented by the Quattlebaum Foretich Gallery at SCOPE Miami Beach. Viewers were “invited into a maritime ship chandlery, where contemporary artists have created their own message for the ages, captured inside bottles and waiting to be unlocked by their new owners.”

A large screen on the opposite wall of the clean and high-end lobby of Miami’s South East Financial Center is most likely first thing one notices walking in. This past weekend it took a break from the commercial ads to screen Interior Islands, a video project created for DWNTWN Art Days. The experimental short film was screening next to an AuBon Pain, an unusual setting for this style of art. Expressive and modern art doesn’t usually come with one’s morning coffee and croissant.
