Insiders Guide: Buying and Selling on Poshmark

Looking for a way to make some extra cash?  You need to check out Poshmark! Over 50 million users already use the technology to shop and sell clothing, and their recent expansion into home decor has the public very excited. The Verge described Poshmark as a being a “Lifestyle marketplace”.

Last year Poshmark had officially paid out over a billion dollars to all it’s sellers. One woman hit the $1 million dollar mark in all time sales! She is one of many entrepreneurs that have created full blown businesses through the technology. The online stores of sellers vary from used clothing, to unique startup brands and small businesses. I’ve used the app to bring in side income, and I’ve met amazing people through the community. Most recently I connected with Avni Parekh.

Avni is a designated Poshmark stylist. Sellers with this designation curate items for the community based on shopper’s unique styles. Yes, the platform is great for savy entrepreneurs, but the majority of users are people looking to shop! In addition to helping these shoppers online, Avni represents Poshmark at their IRL (in real life) events like the Poshmark Live party held earlier this year in Miami.

Whether you’re already hip to the Poshmark biz, thinking about getting started, or maybe you just want to shop on the marketplace, check out Avni’s tips for buying and selling on Poshmark below!

Tip numero uno:

Invest in a thermal printer to save on ink and paper especially if you plan to use Poshmark seriously as a tool for making money. I use a ROLLO Printer that prints 4 by 6-inch shipping labels. It doesn’t require ink at all, you just have to purchase extra shipping labels once you finish the pack that comes with this small-sized printer.

Tropi Tip: You can find other thermal printers on Amazon like this one.

Tip numero dos:

Sell similar items in your closet as a bundle especially if they’re gently worn or if you have the same piece in several colors. I’ve seen fantastic results when I group together work pants that I’ve used but are in excellent used condition (EUC), and tanks and blouses that are new with tags (NWT).

Tip numero tres:

Be diligent about inspecting the item before buying. If enough information isn’t provided on the listing, then ask the seller. You should be keen to look out for exact measurements for bust, waist, hips as well as inseam for pants. It also doesn’t hurt to ask if there are any stains, tears or imperfections either.

Tip numero cuatro:

Change your cover photo if your listing isn’t making an impression on your followers. For instance, take a better flatlay photo, find the stock photo online or take a clear photo of yourself modeling the item if your listing isn’t garnering likes. Keep in mind, the more likes you have, the greater the potential for selling your item.

For example, when I changed my cover photo on this listing below, to the stock photo of the model wearing the pants, it sold quickly right after!

Tip numero cinco:

Always be polite to poshers who communicate with you about items from your closet that interest them. I’ve read comments by some sellers, for instance, whose responses to potential clients come across as rude and disengaged. If you want to be successful on Poshmark, it’s important to realize that providing exceptional customer service applies even though you’re doing business through an app.

Tip numero seis:

Style entire outfits using items in your closet as photos for your cover listings. Oftentimes, when you style an awesome outfit, buyers will ask you if you are selling the other pieces that are pictured, like a purse, earrings, shoes, etc. As a matter of fact, I have sold several pieces in my closet to buyers who fell in love with the entire outfit pictured in my flatlay cover or in the photo of me modeling the item.

Tip numero siete:

Order your packaging supplies directly from for free to save yourself from making unnecessary trips to the post office. The United States Postal Service plays an integral role on Poshmark, not only do they help to track your package and ensure one, two or three-day deliveries via Priority Mail, they will also deliver your packaging supplies, from boxes to envelopes to labels and more, directly to your residence at no charge to you!

Tip numero ocho:

Follow poshers who like the same brands that you sell in your closet. This technique helps to gain followers who are inclined to buy the brands you carry. You can also share items from your closet directly to these poshers since you already know which brands they like.

Go to the “Discover People” section under “Shop” to capture the “My Brands” icon.
