David Adjaye | Designer of the Year

Design Miami, the global forum for design, has selected David Adjaye as this year’s recipient of the Designer of the Year Award.

Each year, Design Miami recognizes an internationally renowned architect, designer, or studio whose body of work demonstrates unmatched quality, innovation and influence, while expanding the boundaries of design. The winner is determined by a diverse selection committee comprising individuals who significantly impact international design discourse. London based artist David Adjaye is one of the world’s leading architects, using architecture as a catalyst for generating community. His ingenious use of materials and unique ability to showcase light coupled established his reputation as an architect with artistic vision.

Genesis

The award presented David Adjaye the opportunity to design a site-specific installation for Design Miami. His pavilion, Genesis, takes the essence of his architectural ideas to a wider public serving as entryway to the fair and communal space.

For the first time, Adjaye is able to combine structure, seating, window and doors into a single temporary structure composed of hundreds of vertical wooden planks. The triangular pavilion provides organic interior seating and opens up to the sky and surrounding environment.
