Art Miami

2k11 Highlights

The weather is cool, the sun is out, and season is here! With Art Basel just around the corner, the sprawling white pavilion tents of many-a satellite fair stand ready for occupation, so let’s talk about art, Miami.

Anchor art fair to the magic city and Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair, Art Miami returns for its 22nd edition in 2011. Art Miami now includes more than 110 galleries from 18 countries, showcasing some of the finest pieces of modern and contemporary art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The 22nd edition of Art Miami officially kicks off with an Opening Night VIP Preview party on Tuesday, November 29. The event benefits The Lotus House Women’s Shelter, a sanctuary for homeless women and infants in need.

New Media Lounge | ZOOOM! Decoding Common Practice

From Tuesday, November 29  through Sunday, December 4, ZOOOM! Decoding Common Practice, curated by Julia Draganovic in the New Media Lounge, will be presenting six artist-made videos from renowned private collections and prominent art institutions around the world. The videos explore the human condition in various communities around the world, and each one “reveals a glimpse beyond the ordinary and discovers the precariousness of the stability that those communities try to maintain.”

Ai Weiwei’s Chang’an Boulevard
The Chinese government would rather not admit it, but Ai Weiwei is currently the most influential artist in the world, according to ArtReview. Best known for designing the Beijing National Stadium, aka The Bird’s Nest, Weiwei is actually an outspoken critic of the Chinese government and its growth-at-any-cost policies.

In Chang’an Boulevard, the artist captures “the image of a metropolis along with all its inherent contradictions at the dawn of the controversial urban transformation that overwhelmed the city during the 2008 Olympic Games.” Maybe that’s why the Chinese government hates him so much.

A Work of Persol
Italian couture eyewear designer Persol will be showcasing its celebrated documentary, A Work of Persol. The coveted video illuminates Persol’s collaboration with 17 of the world’s brightest contemporary artists and celebrates the passion and process inherent in a work of art with a captivating view of the artistic process. Check out the trailer (and tons of awesome sunglasses) here.

The film will make its Art Miami debut on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at an invitation-only VIP reception hosted by Persol and Falvorpill at the Soho Beach House.
