Summer within the scorching hot and humid boundaries of the Torrid Zone is rough. This summer brace the brutal heat with a little help from the refreshing Sunday COOLOUT Radio airwaves on WDNA, 88.9FM.
For those from the iPod generation, radio broadcasting is a one-way transmission over radio waves intended to reach a wide audience. For those of you who haven’t tuned into the local airwaves since satellite radio, WDNA, is known worldwide as South Florida’s premiere jazz music station providing quality music, arts, and cultural programming to the residents of South Florida and beyond via their online stream (incase you don’t even own a radio).
THE SHOW
Every Sunday from 3-5 PM, DJs Manuvers and Sire Esq. present Sunday COOLOUT Radio, a hip and refreshing transmission of jazz, funk and everything in between. For a couple of hours a week they channel a bit of soul into the local airwaves, and the show often features noteworthy guests such as Aloe Blacc, Camp Lo, Mr. Brown, DJ Le Spam, Lumin and the Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Vikter Duplaix.
Most importantly, Sunday COOLOUT Radio supports and gives air play to a variety of local artists whose music is rarely heard on FM radio otherwise.
BEHIND THE AIRWAVES
Bernard Hacker, known in the entertainment industry as DJ Sire Esq, has had his hands on the turntables for over a decade. His musical insight is derived largely from the motherland, his birthplace, England. He grew up in London exposed to rock, hip hop, reggae, soul, jazz and his father’s vast record collection.
In the United States he took his overseas influences to the radio; first with an internship at Miami’s WAXY-790 AM, and then moved into programming at Gainesville’s Magic 101.3 FM. The ambitious Sire has worked in the music industry handling marketing duties at Sony Music/ Epic Records, and as a freelance journalist, contributing to the music sections of the Miami New Times and Wax Poetics.
As a deejay, he plays in nightclubs around the city, the country and overseas in London & Amsterdam. His mix CD’s have received critical acclaim and features in various publications. He is affiliated with the Miami Heat’s DJ Irie’s Artist Related DJ roster, and a resident of Champion Sound; a party that caters to the cities diverse musical community. (More on Champion Sound & banging fiestas coming soon)
His partner in crime, Francisco de Pablo, began to deejay and develop his love for music at the age of 13 as both a hobby and excuse to go to parties. He is now known throughout the world as DJ Manuvers and he has performed throughout the USA, Europe, South America, and Japan.
Manuvers then made the natural progression from deejay to producer, becoming the man making the music others played on the turntables he learned to master.
For over five years, he hosted a show on Florida International University’s “Radiate” 88.1 FM called “Funknotix.” Now, along with DJ Sire Esq, he continues to take over the radio waves with Sunday COOLOUT Radio.
