Edwards James Olmos is in Miami for the South Florida premiere of Filly Brown.  The opening film for the Hispanicize Festival was a collaboration with the Miami International Film Festival.  In it“Majo” Tonorio, aka Filly Brown (Gina Rodríguez), a Mexican-American hip-hop prodigy from Los Angeles, percolates with the raw energy of hope sprung from desperation and is recruited by a shady producer who offers her a crack at rap stardom. The late Jenni Rivera plays the part of Majo’s mother María, who is locked up in jail for drug trafficking. Lou Diamond Philips is the father who takes care of  Majo and her younger sister. This is a drama where family  has the power to destroy and ultimately save. The film is a co-directorial work of Yussef Delara and Michael D’ Olmos.  The acting in the film is solid. Gina’s talent is very exciting and she has a bright future, no doubt.

Surrounded by sculpture and art, black-clad female dancers, in leggings and leotards twisted and turned through a make-shift stage, on the marble floors of the museum’s main room.

Unlike your ordinary dance performers, these dancers had musical sheet compositions duct-taped to their backs.

Male musicians, also in black, followed them, playing their instruments.

      A violin, a trumpet,  a voice….

Phillip Bloom Talks Miami & Interactive Film

Philip Bloom is an industry veteran of 23 years of which he spent a large portion working in broadcast news and documentaries. What turned Philip into an idol for many independent filmmakers though is his pioneering work with DSLR and affordable large sensor camcorders.

Basically, he showed us all that gorgeous images are possible on a pretty low budget. We all rushed to buy a Canon 7D or even better 5D, then visited his website religiously, along with over a million other fans, hungry for the next free video tutorial.

FilmGate 2013: Miami’s Premiere Interactive Film Festival [Highlights]

The newest phenomenon in film is transmedia or interactive film. According to Jose Jacho, founder and creative producer at Indie Film Club Miami, transmedia includes using various forms of media by different artists to complete a story.

For instance, you can watch a movie and then download an app or video on your phone later to see the end of the story. The idea is to get everyone involved.  Someone can write a poem about the movie and post it on a blog or write a song or make a painting.

Jose, along with Diliana Alexander, the executive director of FilmGate, brought this new form of storytelling to the southeastern seas. Here’s a look at what you may have missed…

FRIDAYS > > RELOADED

As I warmly recall the wild summer nights that I first hit the scene, when Jennys Was A Friend of Mine and together we discovered on the dance floor the kind of magic that took us to Such Great Heights and back again; I realize that no matter what the current trend is, Miami needs an indie dance party!

The District may not be around anymore but luckily The Vagabond has “reloaded” their weekly Friday party with an arsenal of indie dance magic; guaranteed to bring back that Electric Feel and give the Young Folk What You Want and the rest of us what we need – indie rock, dirty disco, house, and electro beats!
