“Whatever the affectivity that colors a given space, whether sad or ponderous, once it is poetically expressed, the sadness is diminished, the ponderousness lightened. Poetic space, because it is expressed, assumes values of expansion.

To give an object poetic space is to give it more space than it has objectivity…In the realm of images, honey in a hive does not conform to the elementary dialectics of contained and container. Metaphorical honey will not be shut up…The dreamer who dreams of honey knows that it is a force that concentrates and radiates. If the interior space of a tree is a form of honey, it gives the tree ‘expansion of infinite things.’”

-Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

To inscribe anything—an image, a memory—with poetic meaning is wholly intimate and completely subjective. Poetic meaning allows for never-ending growth in a space that is real by virtue of the imagination. Everything meaningful is infinite. Everything is timeless and constant. Everything is fantastical.

Maggie Knox Gallery is pleased to present Tiny Spaces, a series of photographs by Miami-based writer and photographer, Monica Uszerowicz.

Taking inspiration from the unexpected tenderness in simplicity, Uszerowicz employs theories explicated by Gaston Bachelard to unify a collection of images captured during various times in various places. In merging the disparate and deifying the mundane, Tiny Spaces acknowledges both the seeming timelessness and holiness of fragmented, everyday moments.

Throughout the month, Uszerowicz will also utilize the gallery to hold space for her healing practice, offering free tarot and reiki sessions, and hosting ceremonial circles with gallerist Sarah Moody for the Full Moon on May 3 and the New Moon on May 18.

The second exhibition at Maggie Knox’s new location, the co-working space MADE at The Citadel, Tiny Spaces also launches a new set of programming at the gallery designed to feature and empower local women artists.
