MDC Koubek Center Celebrates Peruvian Traditions

Saturday, January 21 2017

12:00 PM-4:00 PM

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, continues its new bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias with ¡Tradiciones: Perú!, a celebration of Peruvian culture, from noon – 4 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 21. This event is free and open to the public.

The Playtime series provides parents an engaging (and free) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive events highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. The series launched last year with a festive bang–a Dia de los Muertos celebration, and continued with Las Aventuras del Don Quixote in November, and a Christmas celebration, Fiesta Navideña during the holidays.

¡Tradiciónes: Perú! activities include a performance from the cultural ensemble, Kuyayky; story time with Teatro Prometeo; ever-popular garden games and craft-making; and a Peruvian music and dance workshop provided by members of Kuyayky. Peruvian cuisine will be available for purchase. Come learn about Hispanic heritage and traditions–bilingually!

ABOUT KUYAYKY
Kuyayky originated in the town of Jauja, 3,400 meters above sea-level. They inherited their rich musical tradition from their ayllu (organized community). Their talent comes from a legacy of song-writers, dancers, scholars, painters and singers, who strived to preserve and develop the music and culture of central Peru.

Kuyayky’s story began in the 1970s when Jose Hurtado Zamudio, a university professor and musicologist, married educator and singer Edda Bonilla Peña of the Conjunto Alma Jaujina. Deeply committed to fostering the arts and culture in Peru, Jose and Edda engaged their efforts on forming choirs and musical groups throughout Peru’s central region. In 2003 they started the Kuyayky Foundation, a non-for-profit dedicated to the research, promotion and development of Andean music and culture.
