Marisa Monte grew up in Rio, immersed in samba – her father was a musical directors of the legendary Portela samba school. At 19, she left Brazil to study opera in Italy, following her idol Maria Callas. The distance allowed her to fully appreciate Brazilian culture, and she returned in 1989 and established herself as an innovative young star in the MPB tradition. Monte has since become one of Brazil’s most respected and beloved popular artists, among her country’s top-selling artists and a major attraction worldwide.
