In anticipation of the Wolfsonian’s next special exhibition, Myth and Machine: The First World War in Visual Culture, come enjoy this classic American war film directed by Howard Hughes. Centered on WWI combat pilots, Hell’s Angels featured incredibly elaborate stunts and scenes of air combat so real that they lead to the death of three pilots during production. With a multi-million dollar budget and stars like Ben Lyon, James Hall and Jean Harlow, Hell’s Angels was heralded as the greatest cinematic achievement to date when it was released in 1930.
