With albums recently released on Diplo‘s Mad Decent record label and years collaborating with artists such as Björk, Four Tet, Modeselektor, and Giles Peterson; Omar Souleyman has become one of the world’s most sought after electronic music artists. Who could’ve foreseen that a wedding singer from Syria with hundreds of albums under his belt would become a cult hero among club connoisseurs? But there is an undeniable bond between the legacy Omar delves in – a synthesized version of the Levantine dance music Dabke – and modern electronic dance music. When so much in this day and age can seem in utter chaos, there’s comfort to be found in how the Syrian sings about the great theme of love. This is, after all, dance music’s virtue: The ability to dissolve us in time and space, building bridges where walls previously were to be found. Omar has bolstered his growing status after touring world-wide and performing at major festivals including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Paris, Moogfest, and Roskilde
“The music here can compete against any kind of dance music being made right now, and succeed.” – Pitchfork
