Belmont Village Fort Lauderdale, a new luxury senior-living community opening early 2020, is hosting a monthly Caregiver Support Group in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter.

Hosted the second Thursday of every month at Belmont Village Fort Lauderdale’s Information Center, the support groups bring together caregivers and experts to lend support and offer tips on successful caregiving approaches and how you can care for yourself and your loved one during this challenging time. Light refreshments are provided.

WHY: According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, a national center on caregiving…
• Research shows that family members who provide care to individuals with chronic or disabling conditions are themselves at risk.
• An estimated 44 million Americans age 18 and older provide unpaid assistance and support to older people and adults with disabilities.
• Adult children 50+ who work and provide care to a parent are more likely to have fair or poor health than those who do not provide care to their loved ones.
• Elderly spousal caregivers who experience caregiving-related stress have a 63 percent higher mortality rate than non-caregivers of the same age.

“It is critical that we provide support for caregivers,” said Christy Christine, Belmont Village’s Community Director and Certified Alzheimer’s Association Support Group Facilitator. “Most caregivers provide care for their loved ones with little or no support while suffering from poor health themselves, including suffering from emotional, mental, and physical health problems. The burdens and the health risks for family caregivers are daunting and we want to do our part to provide support in the Fort Lauderdale community.”
