“Miami Basel: Art’s Winter Playground” is documentary feature film that examines the economic, social and cultural impact that Art Basel has had on Miami.
This feature length documentary begins by examining where Miami’s art scene was in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and takes us through to Art Basel Miami Beach’s debut in 2002. Told by renowned art collectors, curators and politicians, we gain an understanding of the cultural wasteland that was Miami and learn about the sheer force-of-will it took to bring the world’s most famous art fair to Miami Beach.
We then cut to a current Miami Basel week, a cultural phenomenon that has grown well beyond a single fair and into an arts happening that brings the entire art world to a single location for an entire week; and, in so doing, has transformed all of South Florida.
We learn of Miami’s ever-expanding local art scene and meet everyone from art world luminaries like Frank Stella, to young and upcoming artists. We also meet curators, architects, developers, journalists and collectors, and learn how they prepare for Miami Basel and how the week affects them. We delve briefly into gentrification and how art has been used in Miami to develop neighborhoods. We also touch upon the negative effects of gentrification and how some of the tactics have forced out local residents.
