ICA Seminars: Kalup Linzy

Saturday, February 20 2016

2:00 PM-5:00 PM

ICA Miami is pleased to present a workshop by performance artist Kalup Linzy as part of the museum’s ongoing educational initiative, ICA Seminars. Using scenes from Kalup Linzy’s recent work and scenes from other earlier works, participants will have the opportunity to act out characters under the direction and artistic leadership of Linzy. This exercise will provide participants with unique insight into Linzy’s artistic process, as well as an opportunity to explore issues investigated by Linzy’s work, particularly gender and identity.

ICA Miami offers college-level seminar classes, open to young adults and lifelong learners, covering a wide range of themes from contemporary art and recent art history. Admission is free with RSVP: http://bit.ly/KalupLinzy.

Kalup Linzy (b. 1977, Clermont, Florida) is primarily known for his live performances, video works, and animation that invoke a satirical narrative inspired by soap operas and Hollywood melodramas to investigate stereotypes around sexual identity, race, and gender. His films have a deliberately DIY aesthetic and are, in turn, simultaneously humorous and affecting. The artist often stars in his own performances, inhabiting a range of characters—bewigged and in drag—who relate the quotidian and at times outrageous trials of everyday rural life. He employs humor to comment on icons of the New York art world and reality TV shows. More recently, Linzy collaborated on an album and performance piece with James Franco, produced an opera for SFMOMA, and shot two music videos for the fashion line Proenza Schouler. Linzy currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
