Front 242 is a Belgian electronic music group that pioneered the style they call electronic body music or EBM. They were a profound influence on the electronic and industrial music genres.
After signing with the Wax Trax! label in 1984, they started their first U.S. tour with Ministry. In 1988, Front by Front was released, which included “Headhunter” (with a video by Anton Corbijn), becoming the band’s first club hit, reaching #13 on the US Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart. They were also involved in side projects. Richard 23 played in the Revolting Cocks, and Jean-Luc De Meyer sang for Bigod 20 for their debut single, “The Bog” in 1990.
Tyranny (For You), released in 1991, became the band’s highest charting album, reaching #95 on the Billboard 200. Sony/Epic signed the band and acquired the rights to their back catalog. A broader public was exposed to their music in 1992 in the film Single White Female. The video playing in a key scene is Front 242’s “Rhythm Of Time”, from Tyranny (For You). Front 242 released two albums in 1993 on Epic’s sub-label RRE and performed on the main stage of the 1993 Lollapalooza tour. The four core members regrouped in 1998, performed on their first tour in five years and started a recording contract in the U.S. with Metropolis Records.
In the 2000s, they made occasional appearances in Latin America and Europe, even being rejoined by Dirk Bergen for a sold out reunion concert under the original lineup of Bresanutti, Bergen, Codenys and De Meyer. The band re-released its entire backcatalogue via Alpha Matrix.
