Choreographer/dancer Shaneeka Harrell + fellow “made-in-Dade” collaborators present a dance, music and poetry performance that pays homage to Miami as a place for personal transformation.

Inspired by Muhammad Ali’s early days in Miami as Cassius Clay, the performance includes choreography by Harrell, a new score by DJ Le Spam, graphic and set design by Josieu Jean, and theatrical direction by Teo Castellanos.

Cassius Clay lived and trained in Miami Beach in the early 60s in preparation for his fight against Sonny Liston, a fight Clay won to become Heavyweight Champion of the World for the first time. Soon after, Clay, already known for the poetic quality of his speech, converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali, angering a white American audience that had seen him as an alternative to the former felon and mob-backed Liston. Was Miami the place where Clay began the process of becoming Ali?

Performances begin at 7pm and 9pm at Miami Light Project’s The Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse.
