In light of the 50th Anniversary of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), Anthony Anaya presents Clay Bodies: A Group Show. The exhibition is based on a novel written by Edwin Abbott Abbott in 1884 titled “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions,” which is set in a two-dimensional world, and follows the trials of a character who dares to imagine a third.* The exhibiting artists are in concert with their intentions to represent the human figure by way of clay, as two-dimensional objects. Clay Bodies: A Group Show aims to provide access to a research-based curatorial project that demonstrates creative inquiry involving contemporary ceramic and figurative arts in South Florida – through an independent publication for the Miami Zine Fair and exhibition of new works by Edau, Jon Millan, and Woody Othello.
Edwin Beauchamp is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Miami, FL. He is a founding member of Pages & Spreads and has designed graphics for the Design District, MCAD, Books Are Nice, Jai-Alai Magazine, Exile Books and The Standard Spa.
Jon Millan is Colombian-American and he is trained in the traditional craft of wheel-thrown pottery. With an emphasis on the materiality of clay, his work has deviated to photography and was recently exhibited in “ Immaterial”, curated by Don Lambert*.
Woody Othello is an MFA candidate at California College of the Arts with a concentration in ceramics. He was awarded a Pentaculum Residency at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in 2015 and was a resident at the Armory Arts Center in 2014.
Exhibitions surrounding the NCECA annual conference have an important impact on host communities as well as the artists and viewers who travel throughout the United States and abroad to experience the diversity of creative approaches to contemporary work in clay. Clay Bodies functions both as a project space in Little River and as a publication at the Miami Zine Fair.
