Friday / January 17

• 5:30PM — The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum – Art Deco of Napier, New Zealand by Sally Jackson

Please join MDPL in welcoming our Art Deco brethren from New Zealand. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the sunny coast city of Napier, New Zealand. This gem of a city is often compared to a slice of the Mediterranean Rivera down under. Napier, like Miami Beach, is blessed with ocean breezes, swaying palms and a wealth of Art Deco architecture … It is often refered to as the “Mediterranean Riviera.” Ms. Jackson is the General Manager of the Art Deco Trust, Napier’s preservation society, and she will discuss her home, her organization, Art Deco architecture and style, and Napier’s own Art Deco Weekend. and her lovely city. After listening to her description of Napier, you might very well look to book the next flight to New Zealand!

Saturday / January 18

• 1PM — The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum – Iconic Playthings with Historic Style by Gary Sohmers

Style can add value, even to a toy … when a toy becomes an iconic image it transcends it’s initial purpose. Value can be based on supply and demand, but iconic style almost never goes out of favor. Mr. Sohmers has appeared as an appraiser for 13 seasons on the television program “Antiques Roadshow.” He will bring examples of antique toys. He will also answer audience questions about their vintage toys. Gary Sohmers operates Wex Rex Collectibles and Saxonville Auction Services, attends and sells at numerous antiques and collectibles events each year. Gary has his main business operation in Framingham, Massachusetts, buying and selling pop culture collectibles and memorabilia. He has been a featured guest on many television and radio programs over the past 30 years. As a lecturer, he speaks at historical societies, schools, libraries, corporations, antiques shows, and appraisal and other special events on a number of subjects.

• 3PM — The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum – Childhood Memorabilia of the Art Deco Era by Dr. Gary Moss, OD, MBA

Dr. Moss will discuss the history and evolution of toys from the 1920s through the 1950s. The presentation will include several examples of vintage Art deco era toys. Also on display will be a child’s space outfit, baseball cards and a baseball glove all from the 1930s. Dr. Moss is an avid collector-dealer of antique toys for 40 years and is an active antique dealer-collector currently exhibiting at over fifteen shows a year in PA, MA & FL. He is the former owner of Kenmore Cards, a sports memorabilia store 2 blocks from Fenway Park in Boston. Schiffer Publishing published his book, Hippie Artifacts, in 2003. His 300 plus 1930-40’s vintage Hawaiian shirt collection was on exhibit in 2004 at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, MA for 6 months and is the subject of the book Hawaiian Shirts: Dress for Paradise. He lives with his wife, Traudi, seven dogs and 10 horses on Renaissance Farm In Williston, FL.

• 5PM — The Antiques Experience Tents – Modern American Design by Ric Emmett

Mr. Emmett will discuss 20th century furniture, lighting, art and design, paying special attention to the Art Deco era. Many items from his gallery will be on display and guests will be able to ask questions about these works. Mr. Emmett is an accredited appraiser and expert in French and American Art Deco. He serves on the Board of the International Appraisers Association. He has published articles, given lectures, curated exhibits, and has appeared on the show “Trash or Treasure” as a Lead Appraiser.
His gallery is world-renowned and is the premier online gallery specializing in authentic Art Deco furniture, lighting and accessories.

• 3PM — The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum – The Story of Rey Mambo with Marvin “Rey” Baumel along with Kathy and Carl Hersh of Close-up Productions

Carl and Kathy Hersh of Close-up Productions will present an educational video based on an oral history of Marvin Baumel, a.k.a., Rey Mambo, bandleader of a group featuring Latin music.The video was created in conjunction with a teacher’s guide to be used in middle schools. Rey’s story was chosen as the subject of the video for this age group because he arrived on Miami Beach when he was middle school age and embraced cultural differences, which allowed him to create a new identity for himself. Mr. Baumel came to Miami Beach in 1938 at age 13. He attended junior high and high school on Miami Beach. Rey was interviewed as part of the Miami Beach Visual Memoirs Project. His full interview will be available online in Florida International University’s Digital Library. Mr. Baumel will speak and answer questions following the video presentation.
