HistoryMiami offers a retrospective exhibition featuring the work of renowned Cuban-American photographer Mario Algaze. A Respect for Light: The Photography of Mario Algaze, curated by HistoryMiami deputy director Jorge Zamanillo, is the first comprehensive exhibition highlighting his work in Latin America.

The 4,000 s.f. exhibition features over 150 black and white images that document decades of travel in sixteen different countries. The exhibition coincides with the launch of Algaze’s book, “A Respect for Light: The Latin American Photographs 1974-2008.”

ARTIST BIO
Born in Cuba in 1947, Mario Algaze moved to Miami with his family at the age of thirteen, one year after the Cuban Revolution. In 1971, at the age of 24, Algaze began his career as a self-taught photographer. He has travelled extensively in Central and South America, photographing sixteen Latin American countries, reflecting on his exile and exploring his Latin American roots. Algaze has received fellowships from The Florida Arts Council, the United Nations, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been featured in over fifty solo and group exhibitions across the United States and has been collected by such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, among many others. When Algaze is not travelling, he resides in Miami with his wife.
