To commemorate Earth Day, Miami Seaquarium is hosting “Four Days, Four Events, For Earth” on April 20 – 23, 2017. In efforts to inspire and educate guests about ocean and marine life conservation, the park’s Earth Day celebration will feature a guest lecture, happy hour, a mini film festival, Lionfish derby, a beach clean-up, and much more. In addition to “Four Days, Four Events, For Earth,” Miami Seaquarium will offer 50 percent off admission on Earth Day, April 22, when purchasing ticket online using promo code “earthday” at www.miamiseaquarium.com/offers.
In efforts to raise awareness on the Lionfish invasion destroying local reefs and native creatures in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean, Miami Seaquarium is hosting a Lionfish Derby. The daylong derby invites fisherman to volunteer to catch lionfish and bring them back to Miami Seaquarium for scoring, data collection, and a community picnic. Cash prizes will be granted to the winners placing in the following categories: Most, largest and smallest. During the Derby, the lionfish will be cooked by community chefs. Registration for fisherman is free.
While contestants are out fishing, Miami Seaquarium will host a community picnic filled with South Florida marine science and conservation vendors and workshops, including Lionfish jewelry making, music, and food! These events are important in 4earth Lionfish Derby will educate participants about the damage lionfish are causing, familiarizing the public on safe lionfish handling and increasing participation in lionfish control efforts. Admission to the community picnic is included with a Miami Seaquarium general admission ticket.
