Saturday night, the world’s loudest rock band, Motörhead played to a sold out crowd in Pompano. Opening the show was Pennsylvania band Crobot. They were the perfect start to what would be a headbanging, moshing type of night. Their style of “dirty, groove rock” was just the right amount of kick ass to get the party started.
A new band, founded in 2011, they are well on their way to a long career in the music industry, having already toured Europe as well as playing some large festivals and “Rock” cruises, expect to see them around for a while. After the Crobot set was finished, the crowd was amped and ready for what was to come next, thrash metal legends Anthrax. Anthrax has been an American metal musical staple since 1981. Formed by Scott Ian, Anthrax is up there with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer as being one of the 4 bands to push the thrash metal scene into the mainstream.
With current and (former) vocalist Joey Belladonna at the helm, the show was nothing short of loud and spectacular. With the thunderous drums of Charlie Benante, the set was a non-stop head banging free for all. The crowd was loud, enthusiastic and gracious for the show Anthrax put on. Rounding out the lineup was Frank Bello (Charlie’s nephew) and Jonathan Donais. The crowd was out of their seats, the metal horns were raised high and Motörhead was ready to blow everyone away.
Walking on stage was Lemmy in his signature top hat, Wizzo and Mikkey Dee. Standing in front of piles of speakers, they ripped into a hard-core set that woke up half of Pompano. There is a reason they are known as the world’s loudest band, and I’m glad I had my DUBS earplugs in.
Having to battle with serious health issues recently, Lemmy took the stage and gave it his all and he looked well enough to melt faces. His heavy, loud bass rumbled through the audience while Whizzo and Mikkey followed suit on guitars and drums. Pompano was their last tour stop before setting sail on the Motörboat Cruise and rocking the high seas. Motörhead is a bucket list band to see, and I’m glad I was able to enjoy the experience.
It’s good to see some of the once partially used venues back in use. Some great shows are sure to grace the stage at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre in the near future. Check the venue out, it’s a cool venue and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Hats off to Kay Renz and Kay Renz PR for their hard work in getting Pompano back on the concert scene.
