The Hongs have broken through the brick wall of electronic dance rock that seems to blend together in Miami. The whole South Beach, club nightlife aesthetic is seen as stale and most of the music associated with it is met with looks of boredom at best. It would take true musicality to break through that monotony, and The Hongs possess that musical intuition in droves.
This Friday, July 19th at The Vagabond, The Hongs and Beatmachines take the stage to demonstrate why they’re quickly rising to the top.
SafeHouse depicts what beautiful music is all about. With chilled ambient synths, beautiful guitar melodies and harmonic vocals they deliver great tunes, almost as if Neon Indian and Beach House had a beautiful successful kid.
The notion of dropping acid and smoking opium while having the world’s strangest dream is the best way to describe the new 7” from Miami art rock duo Pocket of Lollipops. A husband and wife pair steeped in the sound of Sonic Youth-esque art rock, their latest release, “Letters to Larrup,” is a trippy walk through frantic beats, repetitive bass lines, moody electronics, and vocals that recite loose lyrical poetry.
Testökra took the stage at the Vomikaust show this past March and stood out (almost effortlessly) among the other bands that played that night. As the music began to explode and spill into the crowd at our beloved Churchill’s Pub, the atmosphere immediately changed. The crowd was awakened by the blaring beating life of Testökra’s electrifying set.
Testökra is made-up of three Miami natives - Carolyn Helmers (Guitar/Vocals), Nicole Mijares (Bass), and Ale Campos (Drums). Carolyn and Ale met while going to local shows and Ale met Nicole in a photography class.
Luckily, I met all three and caught up with them after the show! Here’s what they had to say…
