Testökra took the stage at the Vomikaust show this past March and stood out (almost effortlessly) among the other bands that played that night. As the music began to explode and spill into the crowd at our beloved Churchill’s Pub, the atmosphere immediately changed. The crowd was awakened by the blaring beating life of Testökra’s electrifying set.
Testökra is made-up of three Miami natives - Carolyn Helmers (Guitar/Vocals), Nicole Mijares (Bass), and Ale Campos (Drums). Carolyn and Ale met while going to local shows and Ale met Nicole in a photography class.
Luckily, I met all three and caught up with them after the show! Here’s what they had to say…
Much has been written about TEEPEE, the eclectic and distinct musical brainchild of Miami’s Erix S. Laurent (born Eric Lopez-Zareño), a man who eats nothing but fruit and music.
But to try and accurately describe what TEEPEE sound musically (phonetically they sound like toilet paper or conical tent) is almost a clusterfck.
No one could accuse Phillip Roffman, the hyper-energetic head of South Florida promotion arm Subculture, of thinking small. Since the twentysomething formed his company last year, he’s already helmed a handful of successful themed events in Fort Lauderdale that crossed the borders of the city’s underground culture. An event dubbed Sincerely Yours, Marty McFly invited area bands an artists to gorge on a heap of nostalgic retro-futurism, while the party By Way of Wes Anderson took things in a twee direction.
“Poetry is a living, breathing force that can light up the city. O, Miami is its platform.” Alberto Ibargüen, President John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
Poetry comes to the city! April, the cruelest month, is around the corner, but it’s not cruel at all because it’s National Poetry Month. And, this means O, Miami Poetry Festival hits the town!
Arthur Baker’s influence in the music industry is unarguable. Arthur Baker’s contributions and productions will remain relevant throughout the history of music. Innovation is unstoppable and so is the kick behind Planet Rock!
Arthur Baker is in town for Miami Music Madness (as we like to call it) and we were beyond stocked when he agreed to talk to us and tell us a bit more about what he has in the works.
Don’t know about ya’ll, but we’ve been wearing our dancing shoes since Ultra kicked-off the Winter Music Madness (or Miami Music Week, whatever you wanna call it) last Friday. You may be tired but hey, you only live once and isn’t that why they made Redbull (and drugs)?
Although you may have seen some of the Fixed dance commanders throughout the week, Sweat Records and The Vagabond are bringing them together under one roof for the fifth annual Fixed music showcase this Friday, March 22.
Fixed V will be featuring Tensnake (live), Flight Facilities, Bicep, Maxxi Soundsystem and more and best yet, we’ve got a pair of tickets for you to try and score…
