Miami Beach SoundScape Cinema Series Returns

South Beach is known for inflated cover charges, long lines, and bottle service generally comes to mind. Free cultural events? Not so much. Refreshingly, the City of Miami Beach offers weekly outdoor movie screenings as part of the SoundScape Cinema Series, presented by the Arts in the Park, designed to bring cultural programming to residents – gratis!

Watch your favorite classics or new releases on the gigantic projection wall, designed  by Frank Gehry, located at the New World Center ExoStage. Screenings are accompanied by crisp, booming sound intended to drown out the blare of Miami Beach traffic. Bring a blanket, refreshments, and some company – pets included – and enjoy (family-friendly) films under the stars. Series sponsor Citi will also provide a range of pre-movie entertainment that may include popcorn, photo booths, and musical entertainment. Get there early to nab the best spot!

The series returned from their holiday break last week with 1963 musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie and will continue this week with Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn. The series will also feature films shot partly in Miami Beach – such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Miami Rhapsody, and Transporter 2  in honor of the city’s current centennial celebration. Full Schedule

Fun Facts

via New World Center

Miami Beach SoundScape is a 2.5-acre urban space in the cultural and civic heart of downtown Miami Beach. Capturing the spirit and vitality of Miami Beach, it is a flexible, multi-use space adjacent to the New World Center, and serves as both an urban oasis and a gathering place for cultural and special events. It’s iconic pergolas are welcoming gateways and shade structures at Miami Beach SoundScape’s entrances. Three pergolas reach into the space, inviting people to access the interior spaces. These custom features are a sculptural abstraction of the fluffy cumulus clouds inherent to Miami Beach. Each pergola is composed of metal and capable of withstanding South Florida weather. Flowering vines reach from the base to the edges, reinforcing the park points of entry and providing a burst of color and shade.

Miami Beach SoundScape is located at the Southwest corner of 17th Street and Washington Avenue Wednesday and Thursday nights. No ticket or RSVP required.Full Schedule
