It looks like a handful of local tax dollars somehow made their way into WLRN’s perpetually empty pockets. The trusty local television/radio station actually puts together some great content every now and then. We only wish they invested more in South Florida Arts Beat and less in Linda Gassenheimer’s cooking advice. (You’d better step it up, Topical Currents).
Anyways, this is great news for fans of public programming and short film enthusiasts. It’s nice to see public money being spent on relevant cultural programs. In the run up to Miami Short Film Festival’s 10th Anniversary, WLRN is helping to generate popular interest in a timely manner. Good work, WLRN.

Press Release:
Miami, FL September 28, 2011 — Miami Short Film Showcase, a new WLRN Channel 17 series, will be premiering on October 6th, 2011. The series highlights short films from local and internationally recognized filmmakers. This eight-part series will air two episodes, back-to-back, on Thursdays starting at 10 PM throughout the month of October.
Miami Short Film Showcase features 15 acclaimed short films from the local and global filmmaking community, ranging from three minutes to fifteen minutes in length. The series features works from a wide array of genres, including drama, comedy, documentary and animation.
William Vela, the director and founder of the Miami Short Film Festival, and Ron Mangravite, a writer and producer and former University of Miami scriptwriting professor, will host the series. Together, they will provide insight on the filmmakers and their works being featured.
Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite short film on the WLRN website. Viewers who participate in the survey will be entered in a drawing to win two VIP tickets to the Miami Short Film Festival, which includes unlimited access to all of the film screenings in the festival, as well as access to the opening and closing night parties and pre-festival screening and events. We will announce the short film with the most votes, as well as the winner of the drawing on October 31st.
Miami Short Film Showcase coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Miami Short Film Festival.
